Case Study: Slough Multifuel Facility

Slough Multifuel facility (SMF) is a new 55 MW energy from waste facility producing heat and electricity through the combustion of c. 480,000 tonnes per annum of waste derived fuels from various sources of municipal solid waste, commercial and industrial waste and waste wood

It entered full operational capacity in August 2024 with the project a 50:50 joint venture with SSE Thermal and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP). Given the large waste input and the wide range of feedstock suppliers into the facility the team at Slough needed a management tool to help monitor, manage and control the fuel inputs into their EFW facility.

The tool needed to capture both weighbridge data and laboratory data from multiple suppliers and multiple sites (and multiple laboratories) to ensure that fuel deliveries were within the specification parameters of the FSA and the plant’s performance envelope. It also needed to capture tonnage commitments to contracts, capture mass balance calculations for the plant, and price variance calculations based on feedstock quality.

Monksleigh provided a comprehensive data capture and storage solution and reporting platform that delivered SMFs requirements and allowed confidential sharing of each suppliers’ data back to each of the fuel suppliers to allow collaborative management of their FSA commitments.

Quote from Slough Multifuel:

‘The tool that Monksleigh developed has delivered everything we hoped and more. The real added value as well was working with a team that really understands the practical and commercial issues and not just the technical and laboratory issues associated with waste fuel.’
