Monksleigh's annual report on Material Recovery Facilities that handle 'Qualifying Materials'
This is the second report published by Monksleigh examining in closer detail the data issued by Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) that manage ‘Qualifying Material’ under the various Environmental Permitting regimes. The report relates to Qualifying Material data for 2022 only and divides the results into the standard target, non-target and non-recyclable categories.
The report considers both the input and output waste stream data for sites located in England, Scotland and Wales and examines tonnage into MRFs, their mix (including levels of contamination) and the results of their sampling regime including projected costs.
Furthermore the report highlights the MRF input mix of materials received and how this changes when the MRF size alters. The report also discusses the changes recently seen to Gate Fee models and the wide range of prices currently experienced, reflecting significant variability in the types of arrangements in place.
The report also takes a look into the varying collection schemes used by the local authorities (LAs) to collect DMR (Dry Mixed Recycling) as well as those MRFs which are able to accept glass (and vice versa). The report also highlights the considerable variation and type of materials collected by LAs.
To make it easier to analyse the data the report categorises MRFs into four different groupings depending on their capacity:
Small MRFs (<20,000 tonnes per annum) – e.g. transfer stations and LA transport depots with (usually) limited sorting.
Medium MRFs (>20,000 tpa - <50,000 tpa) e.g. those with usually a single processing line
Large MRFs (>50,000 tpa - <125,000 tpa) e.g.those with one or more processing lines and contracts with c.five LAs
Extra large MRFs (>125,000 tpa) e.g. multi stream and multi line MRFs servicing a larger number of LA contracts.
Further information on Qualifying Material tonnage from the individual MRFs can be viewed in WikiWaste and by searching ‘Qualifying MRFs’.
